Dartmouth College

Institution Type: Dartmouth is a private, four-year, liberal arts, coeducational college with schools of business, engineering, and medicine, as well as 18 graduate programs in the arts and sciences.

Enrollment Figures: 4,100 undergraduate liberal arts and engineering students. 1,600 graduate students in arts & sciences, business, engineering and medicine.

Degree Offerings: Dartmouth offers the AB degree in 50 different humanities, social science and science disciplines, the PhD degree in 16 sciences disciplines, the MS and MA degrees in three sciences disciplines and two humanities disciplines, and the MALS degree.  Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering offers the BE, MS, MEM and PhD degrees.  Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business Administration offers the MBA degree.  Dartmouth Medical School offers the MS, MPH, MD, and PhD degrees.  Joint degrees are available in some programs.

Unique Characteristics:

  • Dartmouth is unique among the nation’s top tier research universities for the access its undergraduates enjoy to faculty in the classroom and out.
  • Its quarter-system calendar, known as “the D Plan," and the manner in which students schedule their time on campus and off, known as “the D Plan” is also unique. 
  • Over 50% of Dartmouth students study abroad at least once; many will go abroad a second or third time.
  • Admission to Dartmouth is offered without regard to the applicants’ financial circumstances, and the College guarantees to meet 100% of the demonstrated need of its undergraduates for all four years with a combination of campus job and student loan offerings and need-based scholarship aid. 
  • The annual scholarship budget at Dartmouth is over $40 million.
