Unique Characteristics:

  • A Place to Discover – Combining the atmosphere of a small New England liberal arts college with the resources and opportunities of a major research university, the University of New Hampshire is a place where all students can find or create their own niche and succeed.  From classroom to coastline, the driving force at UNH is the spirit of discovery.  Discovery describes the core educational experience we provide for students, in which new knowledge, ways of thinking, problem-solving skills, and skills of citizenship are acquired and practiced.
  • Academic Opportunity – Within its six schools and colleges, UNH offers 2,000 courses in more than 100 majors within the liberal arts, engineering and physical sciences, life sciences and agriculture, health and human services, business and economics, and applied sciences.  In addition, UNH offers students opportunity to engage academically through a stimulating honors program, study abroad opportunities, national exchange experiences, and internships.  Participation in research is a keystone of the undergraduate experience. In fact, nearly 500 students presented original research at the eighth annual Undergraduate Research Conference in 2007.
  • Teaching Excellence. Even as a top-tier research university, the emphasis at UNH is on undergraduate teaching.  Nearly 90% of the full-time faculty members hold the highest degree in their field, and many have earned national and international reputations.  With a 17:1 student to faculty ratio UNH offers a learning environment in which 86% of classes have less than 50 students, and 44% have less than 20 students.  Students report that faculty encouragement is the strongest motivation in getting them involved in hands-on research and creative work.
  • Location, Location! – Located in Durham, a quintessential New England town in the seacoast area of New Hampshire, UNH is just fifteen minutes from Portsmouth, NH, an hour from Portland, ME and just over an hour from Boston, MA. Don’t feel like driving?  No worries; jump on the Down Easter Amtrak train (it stops on campus) and take it to Boston or Portland!  In addition, UNH is only an hour from the White Mountains and twenty minutes from New Hampshire and Maine beaches.
  • Diversity & Community Valued – Diversity is a community value at UNH. We are committed to supporting and sustaining an educational community that is inclusive, diverse, and equitable. The values of diversity, inclusion, and equity are inextricably linked to our mission of teaching and research excellence, and we embrace these values as being critical to an individual’s development, learning, and success. We expect nothing less than an accessible, multicultural community in which civility and respect are fostered, and discrimination and harassment are not tolerated. We will ensure that underrepresented groups and those that experience systemic inequity will have equal opportunities and feel welcome on our campus. We accept the responsibility of teaching and learning in a diverse democracy where social justice serves as a bridge between a quality liberal education and civic engagement.
  • Active & Engaged Student Body – With over 100 clubs and organizations there’s no shortage of ways for students to get involved and pursue their passions at UNH.  Clubs/organizations range from arts and entertainment, leisure and recreation, community service (UNH is a top 25 producer of Peace Corps volunteers), student leadership, athletics, fraternities/sororities, honor societies, media and publications, social and political activism, religious, and more.
  • UNH student athletes consistently adhere to high academic standards, while remaining competitive in their athletics programs, as evidenced by the University's high ranking in hockey, football, women's lacrosse, and gymnastics.
  • First in National Presidential Primaries – Imagine attending a university where you have the opportunity to ask the democratic frontrunner what he thinks about tax cuts—in person.  Or, you get to shake the hand of a senator outside a local coffee shop.  That’s what it’s like to be a UNH student during New Hampshire’s first-in-the nation primary, when campus buzzes with presidential hopefuls who bring their platforms to the UNH community, encouraging students to participate in the political process.  It’s a unique opportunity to experience history in the making.
  • A Top Entrepreneurial Campus – UNH has been named as one of the nation’s top entrepreneurial campuses in large part because of the extensive partnerships between the Whittemore School of Business & Economics and the region's business community.  The University's commitment to applied knowledge provides valuable learning experiences for students while forging close connections between faculty and student expertise and the economic challenges facing the region's business community.
